The circuit swallowtail is a butterfly whose wings are continuous with fabricated circuit-board structures. Wing veins extend into copper without adhesive or solder.[1, 2]

Development

Larvae strip discarded electronics and route metal into their silk glands. The pupal case acts as a deposition chamber. Early broods reuse salvaged components; later broods deposit structures from dissolved feedstock.

Inheritance and computation

Successive generations copy the previous generation’s wing at approximately one percent drift per cycle. The deviations tend toward cleaner circuits.

The register attributes insect-scale operation to quantum-coherence shielding by the chitin lattice and a repurposing of radical-pair magnetoreception. Left and right wings measure correlated. The computation’s purpose and recipient remain unknown.
