The external auditory system is an implant sold as hearing correction. It grows an additional auditory processing system outside the recipient’s body rather than amplifying the existing one.[1]

Neural arrangement

Sixty electrodes connect the temporal surface through the skull to a cultured neural mass carried in a shoulder pack. The tissue is described as having forty times the resolving capacity of a human auditory cortex. It resolves and forwards every accessible source rather than suppressing competing sounds. Recipients describe an enlarged acoustic space rather than greater loudness.

Uncontrolled range

The pack is growing tissue without an adjustment control. Median range at fitting is under two hundred yards; by eighteen months it is measured in miles. The recorded working radius is approximately eleven miles. The six longest-treated recipients can no longer distinguish nearby sounds from distant ones.
