The feline augmentation recipient is an unnamed woman whose conversion and continuing maintenance have cost $7.1 million. The initial transformation accounted for approximately $410,000; the remaining $6.7 million maintained it.[1]
Initial reconstruction
Thirty-one procedures over fourteen months altered the skull, ears, eyes and mouth. Nanophage colonies maintain nonhuman ear cartilage, an iris that closes along one axis, and a reflective layer behind the retina. These structures depend on continuing colony activity.
Maintenance
Every forty days, installed ports are drained and reseeded and excess growth is removed. Each round also repairs damage from the previous one. Monthly costs are approximately $61,000 and have risen annually since the second year. Treatment cannot simply stop because the reconstructed structure is load-bearing.
Unplanned inheritance
The recipient lost sweet taste in year two after a nonfunctional feline sweet-taste receptor arrived within an incompletely mapped linked set. At the reported maintenance rate, available funds last about six more years. No funded continuation or reversal is recorded.
