The Hemet detainee is an unidentified woman held in Riverside County on 2,873 murder counts and an additional unnamed count filed under a section of the California penal code that has never been enacted.[1]
Charges across time
The dated murder counts range from 1851 to 2061. The earliest predates the 1872 code under which she is charged; 240 counts lie after the date of the report. The section used for the unnamed count is neither present in the code nor next in its numbering sequence. The filing leaves these discrepancies unresolved.
Examination
Imaging found no cardiac structure and no brain. A uniform mass occupies the cranial vault but does not resolve into tissue. No pump or compressed remnant accounts for the absent organs. The detainee eats, sleeps and answers questions, with the exception of requests for her name.
Identity record
Her fingerprints match a set recorded in 1994. The woman identified by that set was buried in 1997. The record does not establish whether the detainee and the buried woman are the same individual.
