Vehicle stacking is the construction of towers of five or more cars on a single chassis. Stacks are ranked by height and by the number of engines that remain operational.[1]
Construction and registration
Inert shells do not count toward a stack’s standing. The practice uses California’s specially constructed vehicle registration category, including a state-assigned VIN and brake and lamp inspections. Filings rose from thirty-one in the preceding year to 340 since January. Each new registration surrendered between four and nine existing vehicle registrations.
Supply and escalation
Mid-nineties Honda Civics are the principal recorded material. A running example rose from under $2,000 in January to over $8,000 as stacks permanently removed multiple cars from an already declining supply. Theft figures continued to rise despite the change in availability and price. The tallest verified stack contains nine cars. Two people died attempting a ten-car stack.
