Bat-winged balloon frogs are organisms assembled by Nanophage Research from laboratory-grown amphibian tissue and synthetic nanophage scaffolding. Their translucent, inflatable bodies were designed for observation of internal functions.[1, 2]

Assembly and buoyancy

Organs are assembled before the surrounding body grows. Modified limb tissue forms wings reinforced by flexible membrane fibres. Expansion and contraction control floating, sinking and drift. A visible cyan synthetic organ regulates circulation and energy use.

Ecological establishment

After release, groups spread between wetland ecosystems faster than predicted. Consumption of insects and small wildlife has reduced native populations and shifted food chains in several regions. Removal is not being attempted; the unintended ecological change is classified as permanent.
