The twenty-seven-day calendar is a replacement civil calendar ordered to begin on January 1st, 2027. It removes Tuesdays, establishes a six-day week and fixes each of the twelve months at twenty-seven days. The executive order identifies Nanophage Research as the originating recommender.[1]
Order and transition
The executive order was signed during the summer and runs to nine pages, six devoted to federal payroll transition schedules. The accompanying calendar is labelled January 2027, and its announcement explicitly identifies 2027 as the year Tuesday removal begins.
Calendar structure
The remaining weekdays are Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The published January grid places the 1st under Sunday and ends on the 27th, under Wednesday. A twenty-seven-day month contains four complete six-day weeks and three additional days. Twelve such months contain 324 dated days, equivalent to fifty-four six-day weeks.
Selection of Tuesday
Tuesday was selected for having the fewest fixed religious observances, the lowest volume of scheduled surgery and the smallest required payroll adjustment. These are the stated administrative grounds for removing it.
Historical precedents
The accompanying record cites France’s ten-day week, introduced in 1793 and abandoned within twelve years, with the interval between rest days identified as a major problem. It also cites the Soviet six-day week of 1931–1940 and Kodak’s internal thirteen-month calendar, retained until 1989 without gaining wider adoption. These examples place the order within an earlier history of unsuccessful calendar reform.
Unassigned days
The order neither shortens the year, lengthens any month nor provides intercalary days. Its 324 dated days leave approximately forty-one days outside the calendar. Those days still occur; the order supplies no section explaining how they are to be accounted for.
Disclosure restriction
The submission underlying Nanophage Research’s recommendation is exempt from disclosure for twenty-five years. The published record does not provide a release date.
