The unentered room is the space beyond an opening in an otherwise ordinary, measured room. Instruments cross its threshold, but every attempted human entry ends when the person loses the intention to proceed.[1, 2]
Optical boundary
The opening remains flat black across film stocks, sensors and exposures up to forty minutes. Flash produces no reflection, falloff or indication of a far surface. Rangefinders return no signal.
Instrument tests
A weighted line paid out completely without becoming taut, then returned cold, dry and slightly heavier. The added weight was attributed to condensation without further investigation. Two microphones placed inside recorded eleven hours of silence with a noise floor below the surrounding room. Air flows continuously inward; its destination is unknown.
Failure of intention
No barrier, access policy or guard prevents entry. Nevertheless, the recorded number of human crossings throughout the building’s operational life is zero. At the frame, people forget their purpose without fear or distress and turn away. Staff involved in documenting the opening report the same effect.
